Tuesday's for Covers #01: Fire - Bruce Springsteen

From now on Tuesday will be the day for covers and today we’ll start with "fire"!!

Written in May 1977, after Bruce Springsteen attended an Elvis Presley concert in Philadelphia, “Fire” was sent to Presley, with the hope that Elvis would sing it, but the “King” died soon after.

At that period, Springsteen couldn’t record his own songs due to some legal reasons, so his friend Robert Gordon was the first to record it, releasing "Fire" on his 1978 album Fresh Fish Special. Its rhythm and lyrics, describing a passionate lust a couple has for each other, seems that would have fit well for Elvis.

The song became a hit when the Pointer Sisters recorded it later in 1978, with their version hitting #2 in the US.

Springsteen considered using this on his albums Darkness On The Edge Of Town (1978) and The River (1980), but decided it did not fit the mood of either album and he kept it unreleased until 1986, when Springsteen's version was included on his boxed set, Live 1975-1985.
