Remembering David Byron!!

February 28, the last day of the month and after the morning post of the Uriah Heep’s song, I made a search and find that like today, the singer of the band, one of the greatest voices hard rock ever had, passed away.

Born David Garrick in Essex, England, on January 29, 1947 and best known as the frontman of Uriah Heep, singer David Byron started his career as a member of the band Stalkers. After that, he and the group's guitarist Mick Box formed Spice who changed the name to Uriah Heep in 1970.

They soon rose to stardom on both sides of the Atlantic, with much of the attention focused on Byron's operatic vocals. He issued his first solo effort [Take No Prisoners] in 1975 but a year later his longtime drinking problem led to his dismissal from the band. He formed Rough Diamond who issued only a self-titled LP in 1977, before disbanding, and Byron released his second solo LP [Baby Faced Killer] which was not successful. After that he formed the Byron Band, who released only one LP in 1981.

Byron's alcoholism worsened, his career dried up and finally he was found dead in his Reading home, on February 28, 1985. [excerpts taken from artist’s biography by Jason Ankeny – allmusic.com]

This is an unofficial compilation of nine Byron’s solo songs, plus one from each of his bands.

Monday's Song : Uriah Heep – WHY [1971]

This week begins with a loud WHY!!
I chose this song not for the meaning of the lyrics, but for its title.
Look at the red or crying eyes of the children, who say goodbye to their fathers and try to find the right words to explain them WHY they have to live in a way that they knew only from the movies.

Thought of no tomorrow

The pain, tears and sorrow

And you never told me why

Well, I'm gonna find out

What's been messing up your mind
