“You sheltered me from harm … Kept me warm, kept me warm
You gave my life to me … Set me free, set me free
The finest years I ever knew … Were all the years I had with you
And I would give anything I own … I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own … Just to have you back again” [Everything I Own]
Beloved father. These are some of the words I wish I could have told you, but David Gates sang them first. I remember you every day, but today the memory is painful. So, with borrowed words and music, with your gaze falling on me sad and tender as always, I tried to make something for you, something that will exist and reminds us of you … forever.
"Back To Earth", taken from the album Caught In The Light [1993] from Barclay James Harvest, is a very personal song from John Lees, written following the death of his father in 1992. John dedicated it not only to the loving memory of his father but also to all those who mourn for the loss of someone they love.
